- St. Jude Miraculous Intervention: Transforming My Texas DPS Visit
As a convert to Catholicism, I must admit that St. Jude was not a saint I had called on for intercession in the past. Sure, I had heard references to St. Jude as someone who could help with “impossible causes,” but prior to my becoming Catholic, I had little experience with saints other than my lifelong odd relationship with St. Michael the Archangel and a growing awareness of my guardian angel. But even more so, who thought the opportunity to meet St. Jude would be at the Texas DPS?
My Texas DPS Dilemma: An Unexpected Challenge
That ended eight years ago when I embarked on what appeared to be a hopeless case when I suddenly thought it might be time to pray to St. Jude. After all, I could use a little help: I had to renew my driver’s license — in person. Worse, I’d forgotten my glasses, and the local Texas DPS was packed with people. Instead of being mired in a lost cause, standing in line for more than two hours, my encounter with the saint opened the door wide to the possibility of daily spiritual help from all the saints.
It’s not like I had a gazillion tickets or that I had some huge health issue that would have kept me from driving. Not at all. But before I even got there, I had found a lot more hoops to jump through before I even appeared for the renewal.
For starters, I had received a letter with a rather lengthy list of documentation I needed. Things like a copy of a utility bill, social security card, and all that stuff that I know I have somewhere but not here, not now. My morning had been spent frantically pulling paperwork together for my visit to the Texas DPS, where St. Jude's intervention proved crucial.
A Glimpse of Faith: Turning to the Saints
Faced with an overcrowded DPS office and a guaranteed minimum two-hour wait at the Texas DPS, I held up the wall, looked at each person slowly going through the process, and wondered if any divine intervention was possible. And then, St. Jude the Apostle and his passion for hopeless cases came to mind. Should I pray to him?
Uh oh. The eye test. I suddenly had a sinking feeling: I didn’t have my prescription glasses. What now?
Sure, I could have thrown up my hands, walked out, and hoped I’d be able to get back before my license expired, but I decided to do what any good Catholic would do as I understood it: I prayed.
To be honest, at the time I didn’t know many Catholic prayers and even fewer by heart, but I had learned the Glory Be and the Hail Mary and have always known the Our Father. I also decided an impromptu informal chaplet to Saint Michael, my patron saint, was in order, as well as prayers to my Guardian angel and any other angel willing to help. Then, my thoughts turned to St. Jude, known for his intercession in impossible situations, and I prayed for his guidance and assistance during my visit to the Texas DPS.
St. Jude's Miraculous Help: Divine Assistance at the Texas DPS
I do remember having a fleeting thought that it would be if the DPS person would simply waive the paperwork and give me a pass on the eye test, but I knew that was not going to happen. After all, I’d had the eyeglass restriction on my driver’s license since my first license for (ahem) nearly 40 years, and not once had I ever passed an eye test, not even as a teen. Still, I persevered in my prayers and probably bored Saint Jude to death in the process.
After an hour and a half of prayer, yes, really, I settled down and waited. Another ninety minutes passed before I heard my number called.
The woman behind the counter had a purple flower in her hair and a James Avery butterfly ring on her finger. I couldn’t help but smile, sensing a touch of grace. She quickly scanned my documentation.
“Your birth certificate?”
“Uh. . . no–” I handed what papers I had.
“That’s okay. Get your glasses and read that first line there,” she said pointing to the reader contraption as she continued scanning my papers.
“Uh, let me see if I have my glasses.”
“Give it a try and if you need to put your glasses on you can afterward.”
With one glance, I looked at those soft letters and rattled them off at lightning speed.
“No problem,” she said and smiled. “You don’t even need that eyeglass restriction. I’m going to remove it so you don’t have to worry about carrying your glasses.”
Then she took my photo. I signed my name, and she handed me my paper license.
For the first time in my life, I was the proud owner of an unrestricted driver’s license. Bless you, Saint Jude.
